Facebook is a social website where people meet, discuss, comment, chat, share pictures, music& videos, play games etc.
Similar websites are twitter and Myspace.
You have to sign up by filling a short form requesting a few information like ur name, email, date of birth, sex etc and u provide a password, similar to opening a new email account. Your profile page on facebook is like your personal website which contains any info u want the public to see such as ur name, pictures, your location, your friends list, your education details, your job details, ur contact details, ur hobbies etc
Just like ur contacts in ur phonebook, u also have a friends list in facebook. You can add to this list by searching for your friends thru their names or emails (if they already have a facebook account) and wen u find them, u have to request their friendship and wait for them to accept u. U can also request people u don't know, they have a choice of accepting or rejecting u.
