Open Question: If I wish to use firefox which is now on my computer should I dump IE off the hard drive?

It does not slow down your computer if you leave it installed. If you require more hard drive space, uninstall applications which you no longer require. Also use CCleaner to get rid of temporary files.

But you can only Disable Internet explorer, even then it not necessary. Just set Firefox as the default program to open websites and thats more then enough.
