Open Question: I just reinstalled windows on a computer, but now the internet doesn't work on it?

Home >All Categories > Computers & Internet >Internet >Other - Internet >Open QuestionJohn John Member since:March 25, 2006Total points:8,262 (Level 5)I had to reinstall windows 7 again so that it could get components it was missing.. it seemed to install fine and everything (internet was working perfectly before) Once it was finished reinstalling, internet doesn't work anymore. The network adapter icon says it's working, and says there's "internet access". But if I start internet explorer, or steam, or yahoo messenger, or anything that uses the internet.. it won't work. Ethernet cable is plugged in propertly.. as I said it was working FINE before i reinstalled windows.... and windows update is stuck at "42% downloading updates", and has been that way for a while. All other computers connected to the network can access the internet and work fine. It's just the one I reinstalled windows on.. what do you think the problem is?? thxAnswer Question

Tell me, all the other computer which are connected to this network ( a common modem I suppose ), do they need to provide a User ID and Password to connect to net? If they have to do so, then you need to create a "New broadband connection" on your system and put in the User ID and Password your ISP provided to you.
Now, if the other systems don't need to provide all that for getting connected then maybe your Local Area Connection setting are not proper. You need to set the Gateway as the IP of the modem (which is most of the time 192.168.1.1) and you need to give your computer an IP address different from the computers already present in your network. I'm talking about a Static Local IP which should be different from the IPs of computers on your network.
Do this much and you'll be good to go live! :)
If you still have problems connecting you may want to send me an email.
