Open Question: So, I sarted using Google Chrome to get new gmail notification, but all I get is a number on top in the tab?

I have that on Yahoo through Yahoo messenger (thinking of going back to Yahoo mail just for that). I tried everything listed in the mail settings and mail help to no avail.
